Metáfora y filosofía en Ortega y Gasset

Abstract

In the light of texts written by the philosopher José Ortega y Gasset —in particular, of his essay “The two great metaphors”— this work investigates the mutual relationship between the ideas of metaphor and philosophy. Ortega’s thesis that “metaphor is a truth, a knowledge of realities” motivates both methodological considerations and an elaboration of the notion of metaphorical truth, all this in dialogue with pertinent contemporary developments. According to the underlying approach, while philosophical discourse allows us to characterize and assess an interesting cognitive use of metaphor, the latter makes us realize that, finally, philosophy depends much more radically on perspectives, embodied in certain types of metaphors, that on particular beliefs or even groups of beliefs.
