Inefabilidad e Incomprensibilidad divinas en Agustín de Hipona y la teología negativa de Mario Victorino

Abstract

In the first part, we will develop the Augustinian conception of divine “ineffability” and “incomprehensibility”, in order to show the importance of both notions in his theological conception. In the second part, Marius Victorinus ‘s negative theology will be discussed. We will conclude pointing out three elements that confirm the influence of Victorinus on the theological conception of the Bishop of Hippo: 1) only the beginning is discernible and defined by its own existence, 2) the priority of the principle with respect to all opposition, 3) docta ignorantia as a way of knowing more adequate to approach the divine nature, than rational knowledge.
